Why Courtex doesn't have an App Store app (yet)

One of the questions I get asked from time to time is:

"When is the Courtex mobile app coming to the App Store?"

The answer might surprise you: in many ways, it already has.

Courtex can be installed directly onto your phone, tablet, or computer using Progressive Web App (PWA) technology. Once installed, it launches from your home screen just like any other app, complete with its own icon and full-screen experience.

So why build a PWA instead of native iPhone and Android apps?

For Courtex, it comes down to focusing on what matters most to badminton communities.

Keeping costs affordable for clubs

Most badminton clubs and organisers operate on tight margins.

Every additional cost eventually has to be paid by someone — whether that's organisers, clubs, or players themselves.

Building and maintaining separate iPhone and Android applications adds significant development overhead, while app store commissions can further reduce already thin margins.

By keeping the platform simpler and more efficient to operate, Courtex can keep prices affordable for the grassroots communities it was built to support.

Faster improvements for everyone

One of the biggest advantages of a web-first platform is speed.

Traditional mobile apps often require updates to be submitted to app stores, reviewed, approved, and then downloaded by users before new features become available.

With Courtex, updates are available immediately.

When a new feature is released, a bug is fixed, or an improvement is made, everyone gets access straight away.

That means less waiting and faster iteration based on feedback from players and organisers.

More time building badminton features

Every hour spent maintaining separate iPhone and Android applications is an hour not spent improving the things that actually matter to badminton communities.

Features like:

  • Better organiser tools
  • Attendance tracking
  • Payments and financial management
  • Player profiles and rankings
  • Match history and analytics

Courtex is still growing and evolving quickly. Right now, investing in badminton features delivers far more value than investing in multiple versions of the same application.

One experience across every device

Badminton organisers don't work from a single device.

You might create sessions from your laptop at home, manage attendance from a tablet at the venue, and check registrations from your phone on the way to the courts.

Players do the same thing.

A web-first approach means Courtex works across phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops with a single experience and a single account.

No missing features on one platform.

No waiting for another operating system to catch up.

Just one Courtex experience everywhere.

Easier for new players to join

Many players first discover badminton sessions through shared links, social media posts, or search engines.

With a web app, joining can be as simple as clicking a link.

No searching the app store.

No waiting for downloads.

No creating an account before seeing what's available.

The fewer steps between discovering badminton and joining a session, the better.

Why not build native apps anyway?

Could Courtex have native iPhone and Android apps in the future?

Absolutely.

But building software is always about prioritisation.

Today, Courtex is still learning from organisers and players and improving rapidly based on that feedback.

Building and maintaining multiple applications would slow that learning down considerably.

Right now, the best use of time is building features that make organising and playing badminton easier.

The goal isn't to build apps

The goal is to build better badminton communities.

If native apps eventually become the best way to achieve that, then that's the direction Courtex will take.

For now, a Progressive Web App allows Courtex to move faster, keep costs lower, and focus on delivering value where it matters most: helping organisers run great sessions and helping players spend more time on court.
